Do the math first. A qualifying $1,000 television sale at 2% earns about $20. A qualifying $200 kitchen purchase at 4.5% earns $9.

Electronics can still work if you have the knowledge to produce excellent reviews. But a high price is a poor substitute for an audience that trusts your recommendations. 

The commission rate is only half the calculation

Let’s say two people write about the same three coffee makers.

What can reduce your earnings?

A projected commission is not necessarily a paid commission. Pay attention to these details:

Amazon’s referral session has limits. A standard session generally ends after 24 hours, when the customer places an order, or when the customer clicks another Associate’s link. Amazon also sets conditions for items added to a cart during a session and bought later. 

The sale must qualify. Amazon calculates commission on qualifying revenue, excluding items such as taxes and shipping. Returns, refunds, and cancellations can disqualify purchases. 

Your application must pass review. Amazon says it reviews new Associates after three qualifying sales within the first 180 days. Personal orders do not count. It also expects substantial original content on the sites you submit. 

Readers should know when you earn a commission. Amazon requires a clear Associate disclosure, and the FTC advises placing affiliate disclosures where people will notice them with the recommendation.
